What Medora Health is for

Medora Health answers health questions in plain English, for people who want to understand their own situation rather than just be told what to do about it.

Health writing online tends to fail in one of two directions. It is written for clinicians and assumes a vocabulary most readers do not have, or it is written for traffic and promises that one strange trick will fix everything. Neither helps a person holding a lab report, deciding whether a symptom is worth an appointment, or trying to make sense of what a doctor said in a seven-minute consultation.

We write for that person.

What we cover

Eight areas, chosen because they account for a large share of what people actually search for:

  • Stomach and liver
  • Brain and nerves
  • Blood and anaemia
  • Teeth and gums
  • Weight and nutrition
  • Infections and fever
  • Travel health
  • Ageing and care

How we write

Plain English, with the jargon explained. Every technical term that earns its place is defined the first time it appears. Terms that do not earn a place are cut.

Specific rather than vague. Numbers, thresholds and timeframes wherever they exist. “See a doctor if it persists” helps nobody. “See a doctor if it lasts more than three weeks, or sooner with weight loss or bleeding” is something you can act on.

Honest about uncertainty. Where evidence is strong we say so. Where it is mixed, contested or weak, we say that too. Presenting every claim with equal confidence is tidier and less truthful.

Proportionate. We try neither to alarm people about common things nor reassure them about serious ones. Both failures cause harm.

No miracle cures. If a product worked as well as its marketing claims, it would be standard treatment. We are more interested in what is unglamorous and effective than in what is new and promoted.

What we are not

We are not a replacement for a doctor who can examine you, read your history and order the right tests. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prescription or personal medical advice.

We do not sell treatments, supplements, tests or consultations, and we do not recommend particular hospitals, clinics or practitioners.

Our articles are general education. What applies to your specific situation is a decision for you and the clinician who knows you.

Corrections

Medicine changes and so do we. If something here is out of date, unclear or wrong, we want to hear about it. Corrections are made promptly and significant ones are noted on the article.
